15 Alternative Uses for Baking Soda

As Preppers, we must learn to be resourceful and have items that serve more than one purpose.  If SHTF, there are some essential chemicals needed for normal everyday tasks like cleaning, personal care, and deodorizing that can be done with Baking soda.

Stocking up on baking soda can be a good idea since it doesn’t expire and is extremely resourceful.  Below are 15 ways you can use baking soda.  Feel free to share your thoughts and add to this list in the comments section.

1. Make toothpaste

A paste made from baking soda and a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution can be used as an alternative to commercial non-fluoride toothpastes.  Or, just dip your toothbrush and toothpaste into baking soda for added benefits.

2. Deodorant

Dabbing baking soda under your armpits makes it a great deodorant while avoiding cancer causing ingredients found in traditional deodorants.  If you have sensitive skin, try using only a small amount.

3. Facial Scrub and Body Exfoliant

You can make a paste that can be used as a facial scrub and body exfoliant.  To make paste, use 3 units of baking soda and 1 unit of water (3 to 1 ratio). Rub in a gentle circular motion to exfoliate the skin. Rinse clean. This is sufficient for every day use.

4. Freshen your breath

Put one teaspoon in half a glass of water and gargle like a mouth wash. Odors are eliminated, not just covered up.

5. Hair wash

If you use styling products for your hair, baking soda can help remove the residue.  Simple mix baking soda to your shampoo when washing your hair.

6. Relieve heartburns, sour stomachs and more

Baking soda can safely and effectively be used as an antacid.  Refer to packaging instructions before use.

7. Make a hand cleanser and softener

Scrub away dirt and neutralize odors on hands the easy way.  Use 3 parts baking soda and 1 part water to make a paste. Then rinse clean.

8. Treat insect bites

You can treat insect bites by making a paste out of baking soda and water.

11. Deodorize smelly trashcans

Sprinkle a little bit of baking soda on the bottom and keep the smell away from your house.

12. Deodorize your dishwasher

Before using your dishwasher, use baking soda to deodorize it and then as a gentle cleanser for the wash cycle.

13. Clean and deodorize carpets

To remove odor from Carpets, generously trickle baking soda on the carpet.  Let is stay overnight or as long as possible.  Then clean up the baking soda by sweeping and vacuuming.  This will also deodorize your vacuum cleaner.

14. Perfect for Camping

Take baking soda to all your camping trips and a must add to your bug out bag. It can be used as a dish washer, pot scrubber, hand cleanser, deodorant, toothpaste, fire extinguisher and many other uses.

15. Keep Ants Out

See ants coming into your tent?  Mix equal part of baking soda and salt together.  Simply, sprinkle the mixture on the places where the ants are coming in.
